Bomta Khenpo

Bomta Khenpo was a remarkable master and also very eccentric. "You and I have become very close," he remarked one day, "and you seem able to understand what I say. We are now connected as master and disciple."

He continued after a pause, "I'm an old man now and I tell you this without bragging, but this old man here is a bearer of the authentic Dzogchen teachings. Still, what good does that do? No one comes here to request them and even when they do, they rarely understand. A lecturer without an audience is no more than a barking dog. What's the use of me teaching into the air?

"No one from Kham, Central Tibet or these southern mountain ranges has come to request the view with a sincerity coming from the core of their heart. My health is now failing, yet I am still the old bearer of the true Dzogchen teachings--and it seems that I am going to take them with me when I die."

It stung me to hear these moving words, so I requested as many teachings as I could.

This actually bothers me.

If we sit alone and practice something eccentric, that others can't relate to, is that really the best way to benefit beings?

Hey Maarten I think you might be missing the actual tragedy here, which is not his eccentricity but rather that Bomtha Khenpo was considered one of the main Dzogchen masters of his generation and taught many great lamas, yet there he was in exile, forced from his home by the Chinese invasion. He continued to teach in India and then Bhutan well into old age, but found that few students were capable of understanding the Dzogchen teachings, and i imagine he feared the lineage of Khenpo Ngakchung would die out. If you haven't already, i recommend you read the chapter dedicated to him in Blazing Splendor. and this short bio is worth a read as well.

I think the point is to attain realization and then help others to do the same, not to attain something reasonable and understandable and then teach something that is nice for others to hear about.

Where is his tulku? How to connect with him?
I heard amzazing story. A friend of mine has a ringsel of him, which was found in the cremation stupa after his death. there were so many, even a Guru Rinpoche statue miraculously appeared in the stupa after his cremation!

Hi Max,
Amazing about the ringsel, though i am more than a little skeptical about how the statue got there.

if i remember correctly he insisted that there would be no tulku. however i will likely be seeing his niece next week and will try to remember to ask her for you.
stay well.

He is in Inida with Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche and Sakya Trizin! He was recognized by Sakya Trizin at the age of 6. I had a privilege in meeting him. If you have any questions or doubts, do let me know at - rangdol99@urangdol.com

Thanks!

According to what I was told by his family, before he died Bomta Khenpo left a letter with explicit instructions that there would be no tulku and not to look for one. Nevertheless, apparently Sakya Trizin has, for whatever reason, decided to go against Bomta Khenpo's clearly stated intention and given a child the title anyway. I don't doubt that whoever the child is that he is a remarkable individual and, even though merely bearing the name Bomta Khenpo, will benefit many by serving in the capacity of a teacher and lineage holder.
