This is one of the most famously copied pictures in India and Nepal, yet rare to find in high quality. It was also a rare occasion to have such great masters sitting together. The place must be either Kalimpong or Darjeeling in the early 1960s.Click on the photo for a higher resolution.

what is the significance of the red and white shawl rather than the maroon one?
ReplyDeleteThe maroon shawl originates with one of the 18 schools of the Vinaya which was brough to Tibet. The Red and white shawl is specifically Vajrayana and has profound symbolism, f.i. the indivisible unity of bliss and emptiness.

once i ask Rinpoche,the reason that some of the yogi keeping long hairs and some not, a they can take the tantric vow for keep their hairs for their whole life...And, in Vajrayana, the hair may represented the "wisdom"aspect,just like in the case of Chimey Dorje...

ReplyDeleteSometimes the long hair that symbolizes the Sambhogakaya deity and naturalness may be for the practitioner's own progress and realization. Sometimes, in the case of a high master, it may be for the benefit of other beings. Taking the position of a monk or a minister may also be for the benefit of other beings. I have found that, sometimes, it is better for us to withold judgement.
